I became interested in the benefits of massage before I even knew there was such a thing as massage therapy

I would happily offer informal shoulder or foot massages to family and friends suffering from aches and pains. My mother is partially disabled with a bad back and as she frequently experiences pain, stiffness and restricted mobility this was another reason for my interest, as I saw first-hand the limiting effects of her condition and how massage helped to give her relief.

People often told me that I’d got a knack for massage and that I should take it up professionally

Much of my career to that point had been demanding roles in admin, HR, operations or marketing in companies with high-pressure cultures. While interesting and rewarding, these positions also brought long hours and stress.  I often thought about making a change but massage felt like too much of a leap into the unknown.

What finally prompted me to begin a change of direction was the day I went along to a short workshop about massage

We were taught some basic massage techniques so we could give each other a seated shoulder and back massage. The moment I laid my hands on someone’s shoulders in the ‘right way’ to give a ‘proper’ massage I was completely hooked; I knew straight away that this was what I wanted to do - I had never felt so fulfilled by anything as I did from giving that simple back massage.

So I signed up for an intensive course in Swedish massage, anatomy and physiology and found that I had a real passion for this amazing therapy

I loved every aspect of my training and decided to take the examinations for not just one, but two different qualifications - BTEC and ITEC. As well as studying for examinations, completing homework assignments and carrying out many hours of massage practice on willing friends and family, I also researched and read everything I could find about massage. The more I learned, the more I understood what a powerful therapy it is and how it can be used beneficially to relieve the effects of so many different physical conditions, as well as helping both emotionally and mentally.

Massage training, qualifications, professional membership

I gained my foundation qualifications in holistic massage, achieving both BTEC and ITEC diplomas. Since then I’ve taken a lot more training, with some amazing, very knowledgeable teachers. My qualifications include:

I’m dedicated to my own professional development

Continuing professional development (CPD) is very important to me and I attend workshops, carry out research and take more training every year, to expand and build upon my knowledge and skills.

Some of the workshops I’ve attended include:

I’m always updating my skills and techniques, seeking more ways to provide my clients with the best service possible

My professional association

I’m a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT), the leading professional association for complementary, holistic and sports therapists. I comply with their code of conduct and professional practice and my professional insurance is arranged through them. You can check my details on their register by clicking here.

Bodyworkz Massage Therapy has developed out of my love for and passion for massage

I find it intensely satisfying to work with people in a supportive way, positively helping them by bringing about about real changes to their health and wellbeing.  I don’t know of anything more rewarding than being able to break a pain cycle for someone who has a condition that they may have developed a few weeks ago, or perhaps have had as a chronic problem which they’ve lived with for months or sometimes years.

I find it equally satisfying to see the relaxation and release from tension that can be brought about by massage. It is very rewarding to observe the changes in someone who has come for a deeply relaxing massage treatment. A life filled with stress can be very damaging physically, mentally and emotionally so I always feel privileged to be able to help a person free themselves from this.

I really enjoy being able to get to know my clients, so I can learn about their lifestyle and preferences. This enables me to deliver the best treatment possible

I love to work with people on a longer term basis. This means I can develop treatment plans with them that will be most beneficial for helping them gain and maintain their optimum level of fitness and wellbeing, based around their everyday activities and leisure pursuits. This may be assisting with recovery and return to health after an injury or illness, providing on-going body maintenance massage for continued health and well-being, or providing an oasis of calm and relaxation in a busy life.

My intention for every single massage I give

is always the same - to deliver first class treatments

that are beneficial, restorative and enjoyable
