I became interested in the benefits of massage before I even knew there was such a thing as massage therapy
I would happily offer informal shoulder or foot massages to family and friends suffering from aches and pains. My mother is partially disabled with a bad back and as she frequently experiences pain, stiffness and restricted mobility this was another reason for my interest, as I saw first-hand the limiting effects of her condition and how massage helped to give her relief.
People often told me that I’d got a knack for massage and that I should take it up professionally
Much of my career to that point had been demanding roles in admin, HR, operations or marketing in companies with high-pressure cultures. While interesting and rewarding, these positions also brought long hours and stress. I often thought about making a change but massage felt like too much of a leap into the unknown.
What finally prompted me to begin a change of direction was the day I went along to a short workshop about massage
We were taught some basic massage techniques so we could give each other a seated shoulder and back massage. The moment I laid my hands on someone’s shoulders in the ‘right way’ to give a ‘proper’ massage I was completely hooked; I knew straight away that this was what I wanted to do - I had never felt so fulfilled by anything as I did from giving that simple back massage.
So I signed up for an intensive course in Swedish massage, anatomy and physiology and found that I had a real passion for this amazing therapy
I loved every aspect of my training and decided to take the examinations for not just one, but two different qualifications - BTEC and ITEC. As well as studying for examinations, completing homework assignments and carrying out many hours of massage practice on willing friends and family, I also researched and read everything I could find about massage. The more I learned, the more I understood what a powerful therapy it is and how it can be used beneficially to relieve the effects of so many different physical conditions, as well as helping both emotionally and mentally.
