Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe, oil-free approach that seeks to restore balance
in the body by releasing tension in the soft connective tissue in the body known
as fascia. It brings relief from pain and restores range of movement. The term Myofascial
(is from the Greek “myo” for muscle and “fascia” the connective tissue).
Fascia surrounds every cell, organ, bone and structure in the body, including muscles,
groups of muscles, blood vessels and nerves. Fascia can become constricted due to
traumas such as illness, infections, inactivity and other physical and psychological
stresses. When tight, or stuck, it can pull muscles and bones out of alignment or
restrict movement, resulting in pain and lack of mobility.
The aim of this therapy is to stretch and mobilise the fascia, releasing any areas
where it is ‘sticking’ or constricted, causing pain and restricted movement. The
therapist applies gentle sustained pressure to stretch the fascia. This removes tightness
and associated pain and discomfort. Strokes are deliberately slow and can be for
a minimum of 90 to 120 seconds and sometimes can last as long as 5 minutes. The pressures
used are gentle but firm.
Myofascial Release can be especially effective in providing longer-term relief for
chronic pain and dysfunction associated with muscular tightness, including neck,
jaw and back pain, muscle tension, recurring injuries, scoliosis and stress-related
